Delaware License Plate
Cost: $100 (includes the DMV fee as listed on the application; proceeds benefit the UD Alumni Association scholarship programs)
After payment has been made, email your completed application* to alumni-association@udel.edu or mail to UD License Plates, Development & Alumni Relations, 105 E. Main St., Newark, DE 19716. *DO NOT SIGN the line: Authorized Approval Appointee Signature – for UD use only.
General Information
- The State of Delaware plates allow up to four numbers with no leading zeros and only numbers are permitted. Please email alumni-association@udel.edu for available plate numbers.
- The vehicle must be currently registered in the State of Delaware with a valid registration sticker. Plates will only be issued on cars, station wagons, or trucks with maximum gross weight of 10,000 pounds.
- Vehicle must be titled and registered in the name of the applicant. The title can be in more than one person’s name but cannot be in a corporation or business name.
- No refunds will be authorized for canceling a vanity or other specialty plate.
- Plates will be mailed directly to the address on the vehicle registration unless applicant prefers to pick up the plate at one of the Division of Motor Vehicle Offices (please note this on the application). Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.
- If you would like to choose from available plate numbers, please contact us at alumni-association@udel.edu before submitting your application. If you don’t contact us, a plate number will be automatically assigned.
- Owners wishing to transfer the specialty plate from one vehicle to another vehicle must inform the dealer or DMV when paperwork is processed.
- You can keep an assigned plate number on your car if the same car maintains a valid Delaware registration. Should you let your registration lapse, DMV will retain your plate number for one year. If you do not re-register that number within a year, DMV will put that plate number back into circulation and another party may purchase that plate number. You’d be required to select and pay for another plate number if you want a UD specialty plate.
